So anyway! Monster Prom! I’ve been playing this game for the past few days and I’ve enjoyed it a ton so far! So, let’s give it a review!
GAMEPLAY
Monster Prom is the world’s first (afaik please correct me if I’m wrong) hybrid dating simulator/party game!
By taking a quiz, you’re given increases in certain stats depending on how you answer, and these stats will affect how well you do in events.
Gameplay has three phases, morning, noon, and evening. Morning and evening, you can go to different areas of the campus to increase a stat by two and witness and event. (The stats are Smarts, Boldness, Creativity, Charm, Fun, and Money.)
Noon, you sit at a table of your choosing and witness an event.
STORY
The premise is simple, you’re a conveniently (trust me this is a NAUGHTY NAUGHTY GAME) college-aged high school student at Spooky High School, which is exclusively inhabited by monsters. Monster Prom is in 2-6 weeks (depending on the player number and game length) and you need to get a date.
There’s all sorts of fun twists, character backstories, and more that you can learn through various events and routes. Certain shop items can put you on certain secret routes! If you get stats in all the right places, you can get one of thirty-three total secret endings! (With the Second Term DLC, included with the Switch version)
WORLD
Vaguely similar to Spookiz, which you definitely know about if you read this blog. Monsters go to school and are occasionally hassled by Monster Slayers. Monsters seem to have a bit more autonomy than in Spookiz. For instance, they get to have the school all the time instead of having to hide when the humans are there. Also, Monster Slayers are like leathery arrow people and not like exterminators implying Monster Murder is at least superficially frowned upon by society instead of outright encouraged like in Spookiz.
CHARACTERS
Monster Prom is a game with excellent writing and that shines with its characters.
Your six potential prom dates (at least the ones you’re explicitly told you can date there’s tons of secret dates you can take to prom) are all really fun and endearing!
There’s Scott Howl, lovable himbo werewolf, basically a big silly puppy. Damien LaVey, the rough and tumble bad boy prince of hell, who has a secret love for hairstyling. Liam de Lioncourt, hipster tsundere vampire, yes that is a sentence I just said. Miranda Vanderbilt, the naive mermaid princess of a tyrannical monarchy. Polly Geist, a fun-loving party girl ghost. And finally, Vera Oberlin, a cutthroat gorgon businesswoman.
The Second Term DLC (included in the Switch edition) introduces two new primary love interests, who were previously secret dates in the base game. First, Calculester Hewlett-Packard, a curious and inquisitive robot. And then there’s…

Zoe, former ruler of the dark realms, now a high school girl who loves fanfiction more than death itself! She gets a picture because I think she’s the very bestest!!!!!! I would die for her!!!!!!!!!

Skipchaser for mac. There’s also tons of endearing (and not so endearing… looking you right in your stupid face Leonard stop being awful!!!!) side characters in this game, like the Interdimensional Prince, Coach (who is a tiger), the Coven, composed of Joy, Hope, and Faith, and Juan the Small Magical Latino Cat. (Who won’t make an onscreen appearance until Monster Prom 2: Monster Camp sadly but I still care him deeply)

The art style is very nice! I love the shading especially!
MISC DETAILS
Once again, I’m talking about representation! First off, no matter which character you pick (two of them are masculine and two are feminine) you can choose a custom name and pronouns! Also, Zoe is canonically transgender, with both of her secret routes relating to that fact.

Speaking of secret routes, this game is absolutely jam-packed with content! A full game only takes an hour (even less than that for me because I speed through the dialogue options so fast) so you’ll probably want to play it over and over for hours and not get anything else done!!!!!

I would abso-tutely recommend this to anyone 17 and up. (Seriously this is a VERY RAUNCHY game where lots of not kid-friendly situations happen!!!!) This game is super fun and charming!!!
